The Future of Our Past

Enthusiasts approach the summit of Pen dinas Hillfort in a Royal Commission guided walk.

On the 12 July 2013, the Minister for Culture and Sport, John Griffiths AM, released a statement about the future of services provided by the Royal Commission. He noted:

“I believe that merger offers the opportunity to deliver a more effective and coherent national historic environment service, one which can provide collaborative leadership for the historic environment sector, delivering progress on knowledge, conservation and public engagement. I am therefore minded to merge the Royal Commission with Cadw, but I have asked for further work to be carried out in relation to the relative benefits and disadvantages of merger within and outside the Welsh Government.”

A bill will have to be passed before any final change to the Commission’s status can be implemented. A Heritage Bill, which could include such provision, is planned by the Welsh Government for 2015. The Minister has announced his proposals for the Bill and parallel development, and has invited comment on them by the 11 October 2013. He will then make a final decision on the future of the Commission, informed by further work he has requested and by responses to the consultation document.

The consultation, ‘The future of our past’ is available to view and download on the Welsh Government website. This is a public consultation, and anyone is welcome to respond. Whether you are a heritage professional, a third sector volunteer, or just someone with an interest in Wales’s past, your views on the consultation proposals are important and will help shape the future of historic environment services in Wales.

The consultation will close on 11 October 2013. The Commission’s own formal response to the consultation can be viewed online here. You can also read a summary of the key issues relating to the Commission’s future here. Full details of how to respond are available in the consultation document and on the response form.
