Review of Contents

This survival of early domestic architecture in the older towns of Glamorgan is rare.
Cowbridge, a planned town of the 13th century, has its buildings aligned along the main street. It has a few typical town houses of a side-passage plan as found in other British towns, as well as other dwellings that are more like those found in the surrounding countryside.
In contrast, Llantwit Major despite its surviving town hall is really a large village, in which the somewhat dispersed houses all show rural types of plan common in the vale of Glamorgan, one of them in fact being a long-house.
The buildings are discussed in relation to their historic social and economic background. These extracts are taken from R.C.A.M. Inventory of Glamorgan, Vol. IV, Part 2 Farmhouses and Cottages.
